The atmosphere you want, with the practical details handled
A stove can transform how a room looks and feels, but every safe installation starts with the property, not the appliance. Chimney condition, flue route, ventilation, hearth, heat output and local smoke-control rules all shape the right solution.

A professional survey helps answer the important questions before work starts, so the stove suits both your room and your property.
The right heat output
Room size, insulation, glazing and layout all matter. Correct sizing helps avoid a stove that leaves the room cold or makes it uncomfortably hot.
Chimney and flue route
An existing chimney may need inspection, sweeping and lining. Homes without one may still have options using a carefully designed twin-wall flue.
Hearth and clearances
The appliance needs a suitable non-combustible base and safe distances from nearby materials, following the stove specification and applicable guidance.
Air supply and safety
Safe combustion depends on adequate ventilation and a correctly positioned carbon monoxide alarm as part of a compliant installation.
There may be a route to the look you love
From a traditional fireplace opening to a clean freestanding installation, a survey can establish what is practical and what work the property needs first.
I have an existing chimney
Its condition, size and suitability should be checked before deciding on the appliance and liner.
I do not have a chimney
A twin-wall insulated flue may provide an alternative route, subject to the property and installation requirements.
I want to open up a fireplace
The opening, chimney, lintel, hearth and surrounding materials need assessment before the finished design is agreed.
From first idea to first fire
Start with the room, not a product catalogue. A clear brief helps installers recommend a suitable route and provide a more useful quote.

A solid-fuel appliance needs a properly planned installation
In England, Approved Document J covers matters including air supply, flues, hearths and carbon monoxide warnings. If you live in a smoke-control area, the appliance and fuel must also meet the applicable rules. Requirements differ across the UK, so your installer should advise for your location and property.

Smoke control rules vary by council. Each local page explains what you can burn where you live, or read our guide to smoke control areas.
Before you request a quote
Can I install a wood burner without a chimney?+
Potentially. A suitable twin-wall insulated flue system can sometimes be routed through the building or externally. The route, clearances, terminal position and building fabric need to be assessed for your particular property.
What size stove do I need?+
It depends on more than floor area. Ceiling height, insulation, glazing, room layout and the heat you actually need should all inform the calculation. A survey is the best basis for sizing.
Can I use a wood burner in a smoke-control area?+
Wood is an unauthorised fuel in smoke-control areas, but it may be burned in an exempt appliance approved for that purpose and used in line with its conditions. Check with your local council and the current government appliance list.
Will I need a carbon monoxide alarm?+
Carbon monoxide warning provision forms part of the building requirements for fixed combustion appliances in dwellings. Your installer should specify the correct alarm and position for the installation.
What should be included in the quote?+
Ask for a clear breakdown covering the stove, hearth, liner or flue system, chimney work, ventilation, carbon monoxide alarm, labour, waste removal, commissioning and any certification or notification relevant to the job.
