Charging at home in Bristol

What to know before installing a charger in Bristol

Bristol has a lot of Victorian terraces and converted flats, in areas like Bishopston, Southville, Bedminster and Redland, where many residents park on the street, often in residents’ parking zones. Homes with a driveway or garage, more common in Westbury-on-Trym, Stoke Bishop and the outer suburbs, are the most straightforward for a home charger.

The city has many conservation areas and listed buildings, especially in Clifton and Hotwells, so older homes may need a check before a charger is fixed to the front. Hills can also make cable routes longer than expected.

The local electricity network is run by National Grid Electricity Distribution, which your installer notifies about the new chargepoint. Flat owners and renters with private parking may qualify for the UK government grant of up to £500.

EV charger grants in Bristol

Grant rules in England

In England, the UK government’s EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500, if you rent and live in a property or own and live in a flat, and you have private off-street parking. A separate grant can help households with only on-street parking that install a cross-pavement charging solution. Homeowners in houses with their own driveway are not currently eligible for a grant.

EV charger questions in Bristol

Do I need planning permission for a home charger in Bristol?

Usually not. Most wall-mounted home chargers are permitted development. Listed buildings and some conservation areas, such as much of Clifton, are the exception, so your installer may suggest checking with Bristol City Council first.

Does Bristol’s Clean Air Zone affect EV drivers?

No. Fully electric cars are not charged in Bristol’s Clean Air Zone, and the zone has nothing to do with installing a charger at home.

How much does a home EV charger installation cost?

It depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable needs to run from your consumer unit to your parking space, and whether your electrics need any upgrades. That is why it pays to compare quotes: our vetted installers will give you a fixed price after looking at your property.

How long does installation take?

A standard home installation is usually completed in half a day to a day. Your installer will tell you if your property needs extra work, such as a consumer unit upgrade.
