Charging at home in Belfast

What to know before installing a charger in Belfast

Belfast has long rows of terraced houses in the inner city, where parking is mostly on the street, alongside semi-detached and detached homes with driveways in south Belfast, Dundonald, Holywood and Newtownabbey. A driveway or garage keeps a home charger simple, while terraces usually need other charging options.

Parts of Malone, Stranmillis and the Queen’s area are conservation areas, so if you live in an older or listed property your installer will check before fixing a charger to the front of the house and can suggest a discreet side or rear position.

In Northern Ireland the electricity network is run by NIE Networks, and every new home chargepoint must be notified to them. An experienced installer handles this for you, so make sure it is included in your quote. The UK government grant of up to £500 applies in Northern Ireland to renters and flat owners with private parking.

EV charger grants in Belfast

Grant rules in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland homes can use the UK government EV chargepoint grant: 75% of the cost, up to £500, for renters and flat owners with private off-street parking. Homeowners in houses with their own driveway are not currently eligible. Your installer will also notify NIE Networks of the new chargepoint before or when it is installed.

EV charger questions in Belfast

Does my installer need to tell NIE Networks about my charger?

Yes. All home chargepoints in Northern Ireland are notified to NIE Networks. A reputable installer will do this for you, and should confirm it in writing.

Do I need planning permission for a home charger in Belfast?

Usually not. Most wall-mounted home chargers are permitted development. Listed buildings and some conservation areas, such as parts of Malone and Stranmillis, are the exception, so your installer may suggest checking with Belfast City Council first.

How much does a home EV charger installation cost?

It depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable needs to run from your consumer unit to your parking space, and whether your electrics need any upgrades. That is why it pays to compare quotes: our vetted installers will give you a fixed price after looking at your property.

How long does installation take?

A standard home installation is usually completed in half a day to a day. Your installer will tell you if your property needs extra work, such as a consumer unit upgrade.
