What to know before installing a charger in Lancaster
Lancaster is a historic university city with Georgian and Victorian streets and student housing in the centre, where parking is mostly on the street, seaside terraces and guesthouses in Morecambe, and 1930s and later suburbs in Skerton and Heysham with drives and garages. A home charger is simplest where there is a driveway.
Lancaster’s centre, Morecambe’s seafront and many villages have conservation areas and listed buildings, so check before fixing a charger to the front of a period home. Student lets need the landlord’s permission before any fitting.
Renters and flat owners with private off-street parking may qualify for the UK government chargepoint grant of up to £500. The local network is run by Electricity North West, which your installer notifies about the new chargepoint.

EV charger grants in Lancaster
In England, the UK government’s EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500, if you rent and live in a property or own and live in a flat, and you have private off-street parking. A separate grant can help households with only on-street parking that install a cross-pavement charging solution. Homeowners in houses with their own driveway are not currently eligible for a grant.
EV charger questions in Lancaster
Do I need planning permission for a home charger in Lancaster?
Usually not. Most wall-mounted home chargers are permitted development. Listed buildings and some conservation areas, including the city centre and Morecambe’s seafront, are the exception, so your installer may suggest checking with Lancaster City Council first.
I live in a flat with allocated parking. Can I get a charger?
Often, yes, with the agreement of your building’s management company or freeholder. As a flat owner or renter with private off-street parking, you may also be able to claim the UK government grant of up to £500.
How much does a home EV charger installation cost?
It depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable needs to run from your consumer unit to your parking space, and whether your electrics need any upgrades. That is why it pays to compare quotes: our vetted installers will give you a fixed price after looking at your property.
How long does installation take?
A standard home installation is usually completed in half a day to a day. Your installer will tell you if your property needs extra work, such as a consumer unit upgrade.
