What to know before installing a charger in Lewisham
Lewisham mixes Victorian terraces in Brockley, Deptford and Forest Hill, where many households park on the street, with 1930s semis and the inter-war estates at Downham and Bellingham, which often have a drive or garage, and new flats around Lewisham and Deptford. A home charger is simplest where you have private off-street parking.
Brockley, Blackheath, Sydenham and Forest Hill have conservation areas, so check before fixing a charger to the front of a period home. Flats near Lewisham and Deptford normally have allocated parking that needs the management company’s agreement.
Renters and flat owners with private off-street parking may qualify for the UK government chargepoint grant of up to £500. The local network is run by UK Power Networks, which your installer notifies about the new chargepoint.

EV charger grants in Lewisham
In England, the UK government’s EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500, if you rent and live in a property or own and live in a flat, and you have private off-street parking. A separate grant can help households with only on-street parking that install a cross-pavement charging solution. Homeowners in houses with their own driveway are not currently eligible for a grant.
EV charger questions in Lewisham
Do I need planning permission for a home charger in Lewisham?
Usually not. Most wall-mounted home chargers are permitted development. Listed buildings and some conservation areas, such as Brockley, Sydenham and Forest Hill, are the exception, so your installer may suggest checking with Lewisham Council first.
I live in a flat with allocated parking. Can I get a charger?
Often, yes, with the agreement of your building’s management company or freeholder. As a flat owner or renter with private off-street parking, you may also be able to claim the UK government grant of up to £500.
How much does a home EV charger installation cost?
It depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable needs to run from your consumer unit to your parking space, and whether your electrics need any upgrades. That is why it pays to compare quotes: our vetted installers will give you a fixed price after looking at your property.
How long does installation take?
A standard home installation is usually completed in half a day to a day. Your installer will tell you if your property needs extra work, such as a consumer unit upgrade.
