Charging at home in Oxford

What to know before installing a charger in Oxford

Oxford has many Victorian terraces in Jericho, East Oxford and Cowley, where most residents park on the street in controlled parking zones. Homes with a driveway or garage, more common in Headington, Summertown, Marston, Botley and Kidlington, are the simplest for a home charger.

Oxfordshire County Council has trialled cross-pavement charging channels for homes without driveways, so if you park on the street outside your house, ask your installer whether an approved cross-pavement solution is possible where you live.

The city has extensive conservation areas and listed buildings, so period homes may need a check before a charger goes on the front wall. The local network is run by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), which your installer notifies about the new chargepoint.

EV charger grants in Oxford

Grant rules in England

In England, the UK government’s EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500, if you rent and live in a property or own and live in a flat, and you have private off-street parking. A separate grant can help households with only on-street parking that install a cross-pavement charging solution. Homeowners in houses with their own driveway are not currently eligible for a grant.

EV charger questions in Oxford

Do I need planning permission for a home charger in Oxford?

Usually not. Most wall-mounted home chargers are permitted development. Listed buildings and some conservation areas, such as much of central and north Oxford, are the exception, so your installer may suggest checking with your council first.

I park on the street outside my house. What are my options?

Ask your installer about approved cross-pavement solutions, which Oxfordshire has trialled, and which may qualify for a separate government grant. Never trail a cable across the pavement.

How much does a home EV charger installation cost?

It depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable needs to run from your consumer unit to your parking space, and whether your electrics need any upgrades. That is why it pays to compare quotes: our vetted installers will give you a fixed price after looking at your property.

How long does installation take?

A standard home installation is usually completed in half a day to a day. Your installer will tell you if your property needs extra work, such as a consumer unit upgrade.
