What to know before installing a charger in Waltham Forest
Waltham Forest is known for rows of Victorian terraces in Walthamstow, Leyton and Leytonstone, where most households park on the street, including the distinctive Walthamstow cottage-style flats, and for 1930s semis in Chingford and Highams Park that often have a drive or garage. A home charger is simplest in the north of the borough where there is private off-street parking.
Walthamstow Village and parts of Leytonstone and Chingford are conservation areas, so check before fixing a charger to the front of an older house. If you park on the road, ask Waltham Forest Council about public charging near your home.
Renters and flat owners with private off-street parking may qualify for the UK government chargepoint grant of up to £500. The local network is run by UK Power Networks, which your installer notifies about the new chargepoint.

EV charger grants in Waltham Forest
In England, the UK government’s EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500, if you rent and live in a property or own and live in a flat, and you have private off-street parking. A separate grant can help households with only on-street parking that install a cross-pavement charging solution. Homeowners in houses with their own driveway are not currently eligible for a grant.
EV charger questions in Waltham Forest
Do I need planning permission for a home charger in Waltham Forest?
Usually not. Most wall-mounted home chargers are permitted development. Listed buildings and some conservation areas, such as Walthamstow Village and parts of Leytonstone, are the exception, so your installer may suggest checking with Waltham Forest Council first.
I live in a flat with allocated parking. Can I get a charger?
Often, yes, with the agreement of your building’s management company or freeholder. As a flat owner or renter with private off-street parking, you may also be able to claim the UK government grant of up to £500.
How much does a home EV charger installation cost?
It depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable needs to run from your consumer unit to your parking space, and whether your electrics need any upgrades. That is why it pays to compare quotes: our vetted installers will give you a fixed price after looking at your property.
How long does installation take?
A standard home installation is usually completed in half a day to a day. Your installer will tell you if your property needs extra work, such as a consumer unit upgrade.
