Charging at home on the Wirral

What to know before installing a charger on the Wirral

The Wirral has plenty of homes with driveways, from the coastal roads of Hoylake, Meols and West Kirby to the suburbs of Bebington, Bromborough and Heswall, which makes a home charger an easy upgrade for many households. Closer to Birkenhead and Wallasey, more terraced streets rely on on-street parking.

Some parts of the peninsula need extra care. Port Sunlight village is a conservation area with many listed buildings, and other older properties may be listed too, so your installer will check before fixing a charger to the front of a house. Coastal homes in Hoylake and West Kirby also benefit from an outdoor-rated unit that copes with salt air.

The local electricity network is run by SP Energy Networks, which your installer notifies about the new chargepoint. Flat owners and renters with private parking may qualify for the UK government grant of up to £500.

EV charger grants on the Wirral

Grant rules in England

In England, the UK government’s EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500, if you rent and live in a property or own and live in a flat, and you have private off-street parking. A separate grant can help households with only on-street parking that install a cross-pavement charging solution. Homeowners in houses with their own driveway are not currently eligible for a grant.

EV charger questions on the Wirral

Do I need planning permission for a charger on the Wirral?

Usually not. But if you live in a listed building or a conservation area, such as Port Sunlight, check with Wirral Council first. Your installer will flag this.

Will the sea air affect my charger?

Chargers are built for outdoor use, but homes close to the coast benefit from a well-sealed, outdoor-rated unit and sensible positioning out of the worst of the weather. Ask your installer about this when you get your quote.

How much does a home EV charger installation cost?

It depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable needs to run from your consumer unit to your parking space, and whether your electrics need any upgrades. That is why it pays to compare quotes: our vetted installers will give you a fixed price after looking at your property.

How long does installation take?

A standard home installation is usually completed in half a day to a day. Your installer will tell you if your property needs extra work, such as a consumer unit upgrade.
