What to know before installing a charger in Swansea
Swansea’s homes range from hillside terraces in the city and older valley communities, where on-street parking is common, to semi-detached and detached homes with driveways in places like Gowerton, Penllergaer, Sketty and around Pontarddulais and Gorseinon. A driveway or private parking space keeps installation simple.
On steep or stepped plots, the route for the cable from your consumer unit to your parking space can take some planning, so expect your installer to look at this carefully during the survey. Homes near the Gower, a protected landscape, may also want a discreet, well-placed unit.
Wales uses the same UK government chargepoint grants as England, so renters and flat owners with private off-street parking may get up to £500. The local network is run by National Grid Electricity Distribution, which your installer notifies about the new chargepoint.

EV charger grants in Swansea
Homes in Wales can use the same UK government EV chargepoint grant: 75% of the cost, up to £500, for renters and flat owners with private off-street parking, plus a separate grant for households with only on-street parking that install a cross-pavement solution. Homeowners in houses with their own driveway are not currently eligible.
EV charger questions in Swansea
Do I need planning permission for a home charger in Swansea?
Usually not for a standard wall-mounted charger. Listed buildings and some conservation areas can be different, so your installer may suggest checking with Swansea Council if your home falls into one.
Are EV charger grants different in Wales?
The main home chargepoint grants are UK-wide, so they work the same way in Wales as in England. Always check the latest GOV.UK guidance before applying.
How much does a home EV charger installation cost?
It depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable needs to run from your consumer unit to your parking space, and whether your electrics need any upgrades. That is why it pays to compare quotes: our vetted installers will give you a fixed price after looking at your property.
How long does installation take?
A standard home installation is usually completed in half a day to a day. Your installer will tell you if your property needs extra work, such as a consumer unit upgrade.
